Parents: Are we wrong here?

Parents: Are we wrong here?

We’re in a bit of a sticky situation and I’m just looking for advice.

The other evening, my husband and I had friends of ours over to our home (a married couple). They came with their 4 year old son. Their son was playing with our wii remote which we asked him not to do as we were afraid he may damage the system somehow. After the child did not listen to us, my husband asked the child’s mother to please not allow him to play with or around the Wii. She said not to worry and that she was watching him. Well, I was in the kitchen doing dishes after dinner when suddenly I heard a crash from the living room. The 4 year old had been swinging the wii remote and threw it into our 70 inch flat screen television; breaking it. My husband and the child’s parents were in the room at the time. The parents did not even apologize, offer to pay for the television or anything. We are angry because this is a $2600.00 television and now we’re stuck with no tv. The child’s mother says that it was OUR fault because we shouldn’t have left the wii remote where her son could get it and told us that “it’s an expensive lesson learned.” We are so angry about this….we feel that it is their responsibility since it was their son in our home and they were not watching him. My husband and I are considering a lawsuit to try to make them pay for the television.

I’m looking for the opinions of parents. I’m not sure how to proceed here.
@ Gary; a wii remote is not a “toy”, it is a remote to an expensive gaming system.

We are a childfree couple and our home is not kid-friendly which all of our friends know. This is the only problem we have ever had and it could have been avoided if the parents had been supervising their child. It is not our responsibility to watch someone elses’ child.
