Will I be able to play online with a modded Wii?

I’m thinking about getting the hackmii installer and setting it up so I can get homebrew on my Wii. My main purposes is to play DVDs and have more freedom with my Wii console. Nintendo gave out all these stupid updates that limited the Wii so much. My question is are there risks involving playing online? Can I play with a friend with a non-hacked Wii system? Will I be able to have all the normal features of a Wii, but more?
